Question by geocache22: I want to build a enviro-friendly “green” house. Where can I find plans and costs for LEED and green homes?
I need architechtural plans and realistic way to cost out a “green” home less than or about 2000 or so sf.
Here is what I want:
-passive solar
-Depending on costs:
–gray water recycling
–under floor radient heating
–consider alternative construction like straw bale/rammed earth or modular
–recycled materials for insulation
–bamboo
–natural materials
–solar panels
–heat pump
I’d really like to do it right but I’m of moderate income and single middle aged woman.
I need it to be affordable. I’m in Alabama and few do this. I need to keep humidity and heat and climate in mind.
Under or around 2000 sf
Any info on financing for green homes would be welcome too;

This looks like a decent book to get you started. Probably available at your local book store. Also see the “customers also bought” list. These in turn will have more alternatives.

I presume you’ll be using a builder. The best start might be to find a green home builder in your area and talk.
This link is about more extreme options. That’s likely to be a difficult road to travel.

Cuprous oxide is a semiconductor, just like doped silicon, and was one of the first materials experimented with as a solar cell. But its efficiency was found to be so low that people stopped trying, though the occasional set of experiments are still done in research labs and papers published. It was also used to make commercially sold diodes and may still be, since that’s what a solar cell is – a photosensitive diode. And before you comment that it’s a battery… At 2:30 the cell is getting full sunlight and it is around 10 microamps. At 2:35 I block the sun and it is around 0 microamps. Then at 2:41 I unblock the sun so the cell is getting full sunlight again and it is around 10 microamps again. If it was a battery then the current wouldn’t be going back and forth when I block and unblock the sun. So it’s solar. This shows how to make and test a solar cell using a sheet of copper. These solar cells are basically sheets of copper with a layer of cuprous oxide (Cu2O) on them. The cuprous oxide is a semiconductor. You won’t get much electricity from it but it’s fun to make! More details can be found at rimstar.org Watch my how-to video, www.wonderhowto.com How to make a homemade solar cell with a sheet of copper on WonderHowTo. – rimstar.org
How to make solar panels. You’ll need: Solar Cells (The 0.5 volt / 3.6 Amp type) Soldering Iron 2 x Perspex sheets at least 3mm thick EVA material Araldite or silicon sealant Heat Gun / Hair Dryer Material for spacer ‘beading’ Further SOLAR RESOURCE INFO: www.squidoo.com This part will be covering the soldering, wire connections and EVA applying to the solar panels. The cells are wired up in a series configuration resulting in a theoretical 8 volts from 16 cells. However in extreme sunshine this can result in a 10 volt reading. Please Rate and Sub for more videos
Cost for all materials was approx £40.
